The Catechism of the Catholic Church states in paragraph 1503 that "Christ's compassion toward the sick and His many healings of every kind of infirmity are a resplendent sign that 'God has visited his people' and that the Kingdom of God is close at hand. Jesus has the power not only to heal, but also to forgive sins; He has come to heal the whole man, soul and body; He is the physician the sick have need of. His compassion toward all who suffer goes so far that He identifies Himself with them: 'I was sick and you visited me.' His preferential love for the sick has not ceased through the centuries to draw the very special attention of Christians toward all those who suffer in body and soul. It is the source of tireless efforts to comfort them."
In the Roman Rite, which is observed by our parish, the celebration of the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick essentially consists of a Catholic priest laying hands on the sick and accompanying his action with liturgial prayer for their healing, and finally anointing the forehead and hands of the sick person with oil that has been blessed, if possible, by the bishop.
According to The Catechism of the Catholic Church in paragraphs 1514-1515, the Anointing of the Sick "is not a sacrament for those only who are at the point of death. Hence, as soon as anyone of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time for him to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived." One can also receive this sacrament prior to surgery.
It goes on to say: "If a sick person who received this anointing recovers his health, he can in the case of another grave illness receive this sacrament again. If during the same illness the person's condition becomes more serious, the sacrament may be repeated. It is fitting to receive the Anointing of the Sick just prior to a serious operation. The same holds for the elderly whose frailty becomes more pronounced."
Persons with grave illness, serious surgery or injury, or those weakened by age should contact the parish office at 513-752-2080 before entering the hospital. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick may occur during or after the daily Mass.
In case of emergency, please contact the parish office or call 513-752-2080, extension 116, outside of office hours. Please leave a detailed message of the nature of the emergency.
Note: Due to HIPPA regulations, hospitals and medical personnel will no longer inform parishes when someone enters the hospital. Therefore, it is important to contact the parish office to let our pastor and deacons know that you or a family member will be going into the hospital. Also, it is best to alert us as soon as a loved one enters hospice care.
